On June 24, 2019, Russian Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev will pay a one-day visit to France, where he will meet with the Prime Minister of this country, Edward Philippe. The meeting will be held in the city of Le Havre, which is the twin city of St. Petersburg. There, before that, the mayor was just Philip. And before the visit, the first deputy head of the government of Russia Sergey Prikhodko made a statement to reporters.

A senior official said that Russia is not negotiating with the European Union (EU) on the lifting of anti-Russian sanctions. However, Moscow relies on the common sense and pragmatism of the EU. They (pragmatism and common sense) must, sooner or later, triumph.

There are no negotiations on the abolition of illegitimate unilateral restrictive measures introduced against our country. Not Russia began this sanctioned confrontation. Not for us to take the first reconciliation steps

- said Prikhodko.

He recalled that many participants of the St. Petersburg International Economic Forum from Western countries (held June 6-8, 2019) spoke about the need for the speedy lifting of restrictive measures against Russia. He emphasized that sanctions are not beneficial to either Russia or the EU.

However, he did not specify why, with the daily increase in the number of officials in EU member states advocating the lifting of sanctions and giving promises and smiles, in mid-June 2019 the EU extended sanctions against Russia for another year.

According to our observations, in the minds of an increasing number of politicians and the business community, there is a growing understanding of the ineffectiveness and counterproductiveness of the current sanctions confrontation

- said Prikhodko.

According to Prikhodko, the official behavior of Brussels in relation to Moscow can change in a positive direction when a critical mass of such views accumulates. However, he did not specify when this could happen.

It remains to be expected that common sense and pragmatism will triumph sooner or later

- added Prikhodko,

What can be understood as "resolving itself." But it must be recalled that the EU introduced a sanctions regime against Russia in 2014, after which trade turnover fell significantly.
