Putin: The Russian flag over the Kuriles will not be lowered
Russian President Vladimir Putin said that under no circumstances will the Russian flag be lowered over the Kuril Islands. So he answered a question about the future of the South Kuril Islands in the program "News on Saturday" by Sergey Brilev on the TV channel "Россия 1».
The President made it clear once again that the issue of the territorial affiliation of the Kuril Islands for Russia has been resolved, and this applies to both the North and South Kuril Islands. Although Japan continues to insist on transferring a number of South Kuril islands under its jurisdiction, the position of the Russian side remains unshakable.
Now, as the president noted, Russia has new development programs for Eastern Siberia and the Far East, and the Kuril Islands inevitably appear in them. This indicates that Russia is not only not going to leave the Kuril Islands, but also seeks to develop their infrastructure.
Japan, in turn, decided to postpone the signing of a peace treaty with Russia. And this is understandable, since Moscow refuses to make concessions on the Kuril issue.
On the other hand, Putin’s similar position means that the Japanese side, not being able to return the Kuril Islands peacefully, will not sign a peace treaty with Russia, which is already fraught with certain restrictions on policy и the economy.
