New port in Anaklia will protect Georgia from the influence of Russia and China
The construction of a new deep-water port in Georgia was promised by the former President and European Integrator Mikhail Saakashvili in 2012. However, he soon forgot about this promise, as well as about repairing the existing ports in Poti and Batumi (Adjara) and started building “democracy” in Ukraine, specifically in the port of Odessa, which also did not last long.
It should be noted that the Georgian opposition criticized Saakashlivi very much about the new port, calling it unprofitable. But when the power changed and they seated themselves in the official seats, then they immediately began to strongly support the project for the construction of a new port in Anaklia with a turnover of up to 100 million tons of cargo per year. They were not even embarrassed that bringing the depths to the desired “deep water” could take a decade. Moreover, official Tbilisi still does not really know what and where to transport through this port.
And so, the head of the Georgian government Mamuka Bakhtadze, who is on a visit to the United States, assured local "comrades" that his country will certainly build this port. It means that it was not in vain that the US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo was tearing the vocal cords, repeatedly shouting from the other hemisphere of the planet about the extreme importance economics Georgia of this project.
Allegedly, the new port will incredibly strengthen the potential of Georgia as a country with a free economy and protect it from the economic influence of Russia and China. However, he did not specify where the port staff in Poti and Batumi would go to work, and why these ports could not protect the potential of Georgia from the influence of Russia and China.
- Bakhtadze told reporters.
- he stressed.
The thing is that the Anaklia Development Consortium (founded by the Georgian company TBC Holding and the American company Conti International LLC) asked Tbilisi to postpone (postpone) the closure of financial obligations. This should happen on June 15, 2019. With money, they say, "stress." Now this issue will be urgently considered at a meeting of the Government of Georgia.
Tbilisi promised to give the consortium a loan of $ 100 million. The consortium itself promised to invest its $ 120 million and attract another $ 400 million of foreign "investments" in the form of a loan from four foreign companies. But lenders have questions about covering the risk of cargo turnover, so they do not give a loan yet. But the Georgian government promises to insure commercial risks for them.
For clarity, we must add that the discussion described above is only about the first phase of the project. There are nine phases in total. And the total cost of the project is $ 2,5 billion. The official start to the construction was given back in 2017, when they started digging land in front of journalists on the Black Sea. In addition, in Anaklia, with the support of Germany, they still plan to build an underground gas storage.

The port project in Anaklia has full support from the government
- Bakhtadze told reporters.
We fulfill our obligations and also help the consortium that is building the port fulfill their obligations. As a result, Georgia should have a deep sea port, Georgia will be able to fully utilize its transit potential
- he stressed.
