The Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Russian Federation stopped a criminal case against journalist Ivan Golunov
The Ministry of Internal Affairs of Russia has decided to terminate the criminal case against the journalist of Medusa, Ivan Golunov. Officially, the reason for the termination of the criminal case is the unprovenness of his crime.
The termination of the criminal case was announced by the Minister of Internal Affairs of the Russian Federation Vladimir Kolokoltsev himself. The attention of leaders of this rank to the case of Ivan Golunov, who was suspected of possession of drugs, was due solely to public outcry.
Almost immediately after his arrest, the Moscow police mobilized almost the entire Russian press. For example, for the first time in history, RBC, Vedomosti, and Kommersant publications came out with the same editorial - an editorial statement in support of Ivan Golunov.
We must pay tribute to the journalist’s colleagues - they raised such a fuss that not only representatives of law enforcement agencies had to speak out about the case, but also Chairman of the Federation Council Valentina Matvienko, and even President Vladimir Putin himself.
At the same time, a legitimate question arises - if Golunov’s guilt has not been proven, then who owned the drugs and laboratory that the Interior Ministry officials showed throughout the country? Planted? But then the police themselves should answer under the same article of the Criminal Code of the Russian Federation, by the way, providing for 10 to 20 years in prison. After all, drug trafficking is exactly the same sale as their sale. Minister Kolokoltsev announced the resignation of the heads of the police department, whose employees detained Golunov. But one resignation is not enough!
The case of Ivan Golunov left a very unpleasant imprint. After all, one wonders involuntarily how many ordinary mortals receive “draconian” terms of imprisonment with an equally unproven corpus delicti? There is simply no one to stand up for them because of the lack of strong support from journalists and human rights defenders.
