I did not expect: Why is Trump lingering with a blow to Syria?

White House spokeswoman Sarah Sanders said that at the moment, the US president has not yet decided what to do with Syria. According to her, Donald Trump met with members of the National Security Council, during which the Syrian issue was discussed. Trump intends to continue consultations with his European allies - French President Emmanuel Macron and British Prime Minister Theresa May.

No final decisions have been made. We continue to study intelligence data and interact with our partners. The President will later speak with President Macron and Prime Minister May tonight

- said Sanders.

The US Secretary of Defense James Mattis (who did not go into details and added that he did not want to "speculate" on this topic) also said that a final decision on further actions by Washington in Syria was not made.

As for Donald Trump himself, he continues his “twitter diplomacy”. After his post on Twitter about “good rockets,” it seemed that US aggression in Syria would begin almost any minute. However, now he has slowed down, and he needs time to make such a decision.

I never said when the attack will take place in Syria. Maybe very soon or not at all soon!

“So was his next tweet.”

At the same time, Trump demanded from other countries ... gratitude to America. Allegedly for "good work" in the fight against the Islamic State (a terrorist organization banned in Russia).

Well, if for something you can say “thanks to America”, it is only because such a force as the “Islamic State” raised its head altogether and created a danger obvious to the whole world. And now, against those who really fought in the battles with the IS - the Syrian army - Washington faces a terrible punishment.

At the same time, it seems that the United States is still afraid to strike at Syria’s key ally, who also fought against terrorism. This, of course, is about Russia. Perhaps this is one of the reasons why Washington postponed its punitive expedition. There is a risk of the death of Russian military personnel, to which the Russian Federation will respond decisively, as Valery Gerasimov, chief of the Russian General Staff, previously warned about this.

Another reason why the quick reprisal against Syria did not take place is the lack of unity in the ranks of the West. At the moment, only the President of France Emmanuel Macron expressed unequivocal support for military operations in Syria. Moreover, he even stated that France had some evidence of a chemical attack in the Syrian city of the Duma. (The question is, where does the evidence come from if the OPCW mission has not yet arrived at the scene of the alleged incident?)

As for British Prime Minister Theresa May, at first she even stated that she needed evidence of the use of chemical weapons. True, on the same day she changed her position. According to media reports, Ms. May gave orders to direct British submarines at a distance of a missile strike on Syrian territory. Obviously, this was not without additional US-British consultations, but Theresa May’s very first statement could have slowed down Washington’s determination a little.

At the moment, Germany and Italy have declared their unwillingness to take part in the Syrian military campaign. Although German Chancellor Angela Merkel, in principle, supports her allies.

Of course, the establishment of truth is of little concern to the collective West. But everyone understands that the anti-Syrian campaign, in fact, will become anti-Russian. And here also Iran - also a rather powerful regional power - declares full support for Syria in the face of aggression. The risks are considerable.

Perhaps the first statement by Donald Trump that the strikes will be delivered within 24-48 hours was not a real plan, but a powerful psychological attack against Damascus and Moscow. The latter survived it, which Washington definitely did not expect. The clash of wills continues. There are still chances to stop the war, the consequences of which few are taken to predict.
