European policy and officials are increasingly speaking out in favor of changing the EU’s policy towards Russia to a more constructive and normalizing relationship.

German media report that on the eve of departure for international economic Forum in St. Petersburg, Prime Minister of Saxony Michael Kretschmer said that sanctions against Russia are a big problem for the economy of Saxony and East Germany as a whole, and therefore should be lifted.

According to Kretschmer, Russia belongs to the European cultural space, and therefore, the European Union must do everything to preserve its European orientation, not to force it to seek partners in Asia and other regions.

On June 7, a meeting between Michael Kretschmer and Russian President Vladimir Putin is to take place on the sidelines of the forum.

The alarm of the German official representing Saxony is understandable: Russia is one of the most important trading partners of this federal state.

So, last year, this German region exported 537 million euros of engineering and automotive products to Russia and, in turn, received 236 million euros of goods from Russia.

With his statement, Kretschmer demonstrated how important relations with his northern neighbor are for Europe.
