Fear Russia: London denied US operations against Syria

It would seem that British Prime Minister Theresa May is one of the most fierce supporters of the "international" reprisal against Syria. She has repeatedly made statements that she agrees with the US position on this issue. But this time, the accusations against official Damascus about the alleged chemical attack in the city of Duma of Eastern Guta are so sewn with white thread that even she needs more convincing evidence.

According to The Times, during a telephone conversation with US President Donald Trump, Ms. May noted that the "international community" should respond to what is happening in Syria. But at the same time she said: before joining the attack on this country, she needed more evidence that the chemical attack on April 7 was indeed in the Duma.

It is not about the fact that the British Prime Minister completely abandons the militaristic plans for Syria. But for quick reprisal, ”as Donald Trump wishes, his closest ally is not ready. Moreover, Europe is well aware that the military operation against Syria will cause a sharp reaction from Russia. And deciding on such an open confrontation is not so simple even for those who have long had their fists scratched.

In the near future, specialists from the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) will arrive at the site of the alleged chemical attack. They intend to study the details of what happened. The decision to send the mission was made by the Executive Director of the OPCW Ahmet Uzumju. The organization sent an official request for the deployment of Damascus mission. At the same time, the authorities of Syria and Russia sent their request to the OPCW, which related to the investigation of what happened in the city of Duma. It is worth recalling that Syria and Russia categorically deny the fact of the incident.

On the eve of the situation in Syria caused fierce clashes in the UN Security Council. All resolutions on the investigation of chemical attacks were rejected, and an attempt to accept a compromise option also failed.

The Russian Federation proposed two draft resolutions. One of them proposed the establishment of a UN mechanism to investigate chemical attacks in Syria. Another concerned sending the OPCW mission to the Duma.

For the United States, they also put forward a draft resolution that proposed a mechanism for investigating chemical attacks. But there is a significant difference between the American and Russian projects. Washington wants a special commission to identify the perpetrators, followed by a military action. Russia believes that the conclusions of the commission need to be thoroughly studied, and the Security Council is the prerogative to name the perpetrators.

As a result, the American project was rejected by Russia and Bolivia (China abstained). And Washington’s allies rejected the projects submitted by Russia.

Despite the fact that the investigation has not yet been conducted, Washington wants immediate action. Some advisers to Donald Trump are making efforts to strike at Syria as soon as possible. At the same time, they believe, these attacks should be more powerful than last year's American attack on the Shairat airfield.

As reported in an electronic version of The New York Times, citing sources in the White House, advisers to the American president do not seek a single action (which, in their opinion, will not have any impact on the Syrian leadership), but a longer and more serious military campaign.

However, the position of British Prime Minister Theresa May may lead to the fact that the next Middle East gamble of the United States will be, if not canceled, then at least suspended. Until the OPCW makes any statements.
