Two Russians convicted on coup d'etat in Montenegro
The Supreme Court of Montenegro issued a verdict against two Russians in the case of an attempted coup in this Balkan country. Eduard Shishmakov was sentenced to 15 years in prison, and Vladimir Popov - 12 years.
Montenegro’s national television broadcast a court hearing. The Russians were not present at it, they were tried in absentia.
According to Judge Suzana Mugoshi, Russian citizens, realizing that they violate the laws of Montenegro, have committed serious crimes against this country. They supplied the conspirators with money and instructions. The judge declares that their goal was to intimidate Montenegrin citizens, change the social structure of this country and prevent her from joining the North Atlantic Alliance. She called Shishmakova and Popova the initiators and organizers of the coup attempt.
In addition, 12 more defendants were announced at the meeting, including leaders of the opposition movement "Democratic Front" Andria Mandich and Milan Knezhevich.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Russian Federation rejects the involvement of our country in the attempted coup in Montenegro. The official representative of the department, Maria Zakharova, said that the purpose of this court is to justify in the eyes of the country's population the decision to join NATO.
