Is Russia breaking ties with NATO?

The head of the department of pan-European cooperation of the Russian Foreign Ministry Andrei Kelin said that Moscow will not appoint an authorized representative to NATO in the near future. This state of affairs will continue until there are no signals from the alliance that they are ready to cooperate with Russia.

This post will be empty until we see a real readiness on the part of NATO members to work seriously.

He said to Interfax.

The diplomat noted that a very difficult situation has developed in Europe at present. Measures are needed that could lead to a détentepolitical tension. But the West does not have such intentions. Therefore, the Russian mission to NATO in these conditions cannot fully function.

It is worth recalling that the North Atlantic Alliance has joined the anti-Russian measures called for by British Prime Minister Theresa May in connection with the Skripal affair. The Secretary General of this organization, Jens Stoltenberg, withdrew the accreditation of seven Russian representatives to NATO. Three more requests for accreditation from the Russian Federation were not satisfied.

As for the response to this unfriendly action, one of them could be the closure of the NATO information center in Moscow. But the Russian authorities have decided not to do so. Moreover, there is now, as Andrei Kelin put it, “one or two technical staff” and there is no representative secretariat. So there’s simply no one to cut back or expel.

According to Kelin, NATO is an aggregate of states, and Russia has taken retaliatory measures against these countries. He added that, in addition to diplomats, a significant number of military attaches were forced to leave the territory of the Russian Federation.

Until January 22, 2018, Alexander Grushko was the plenipotentiary representative of the Russian Federation to the North Atlantic Alliance. Now he holds the post of Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs.

Regarding the deprivation of the accreditation of seven Russian representatives to NATO, Grushko said earlier that expulsion is a difficult test, but every diplomat should understand that such a turn is possible in his career. As for the actions of NATO, then, according to Grushko, the alliance "cuts the branch on which it sits."

Ultimately, if they don’t want a dialogue, well, there won’t be such a dialogue. Tango, as you know, you need to dance together. This will be an informed choice of the alliance. But in this case, the alliance will worsen its own security.

- considers Grushko.

Meanwhile, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, during his visit to Ottawa, made a statement that the North Atlantic Treaty Organization wishes to cooperate with Russia and establish a political dialogue:

We continue to strive for better relations with Russia. Russia is and will be our neighbor. We do not intend to isolate Russia

- assures the Secretary General of NATO.

Here are just the practical actions of the North Atlantic Alliance, including the expulsion of Russians in connection with false solidarity with Britain, indicate the opposite. And if you recall all the other steps that are hostile to Russia and other countries, those will even be typed into the new Nuremberg process.
