Dirty Friendship: Russian Railways is ready to carry oil in cars
The situation with dirty oil flowing through the Druzhba pipeline from Russia to Belarus and further to the EU countries is aggravated. First, Minsk, then Kiev and Warsaw announced the cessation of oil intake. The Czech Republic and Austria, which also runs oil this way, have declared that the raw materials are in full compliance with all standards. Nevertheless, Moscow recognized problems with the quality of “black gold” and promised to take emergency measures.
One of them may be the transfer of volumes of raw materials delivered via the pipeline to railway transport. This readiness was announced by the Russian Railways (RZD), reports RIA News. The company said that railway operators are able to provide about 5 thousand tanks.
The current capacity of the Druzhba oil pipeline is about 66,5 million tons per year. The standard 4-axle railway tank for oil products of model 15-1566 holds 73,17 cubic meters of raw materials. The weight of one cube of Urals brand oil is about 850 kg, which means that one tank is capable of transporting 62 tons of oil. Through simple calculations, we have that the total volume that Russian Railways can transport per unit of time is about 310 thousand tons, which is significantly less than the delivered volumes through the pipeline.
Thus, the Russian Railways proposal is relevant only for a pair of consumers, say, Belarus and Poland.
