Do not miss the moment: Russia can cash in on the US war with China

Since April 2, China has introduced trade duties on 128 types of goods from the United States. Almost the entire list consists of agricultural products. In addition to it, steel pipes and aluminum scrap entered.

Beijing cites the protection of state interests and the reaction to the introduction of increased duties on Chinese products by the United States as the reason that caused these actions.

Donald Trump Trade War

The American president has taken several steps since the beginning of the year to reduce the trade deficit with other countries. The United States has the largest deficit in trade with China, so most of the action was directed against Chinese goods.

Trump's most tangible blow was the March 9 imposition of a 25 percent duty on steel imports and a 10 percent duty on aluminum supplies. Innovations affected all supplier countries, except the European Union, Canada, South Korea, Australia, Mexico and some other states. These measures were explained by the prevention of a threat to US national security.

After that, on March 22, Trump announced his plans to take additional measures to limit Chinese imports. The new list is planned to be replenished with approximately 100 positions, mainly consumer electronics. The memorandum signed by Trump is loudly called “On the fight against economic aggression of China. "

Beijing's return move

The Chinese side warned the US administration in advance of possible retaliatory steps. It was emphasized that the United States, by its actions, violates the principles of free trade, which they themselves proclaimed. They grossly neglect the rules established by the World Trade Organization.

On April 2, the Chinese response was taken. A 25% duty was imposed on American pork and its products. The remaining products from the list will be subject to a 15 percent duty. The list includes mainly fresh and dried fruits and berries, several types of nuts and wines, as well as steel pipes and aluminum scrap. There are 128 items in the list.

In announcing these steps, Beijing expressed its regret and hope that common sense would prevail in Washington and that import duties on metal would be canceled.

This whole story goes far beyond the framework of US-Chinese relations and applies to many other countries, including Russia. China is putting pressure on the United States, motivating its actions by violations by the American side of the free trade rules established by the WTO. The abolition of American duties on the import of metal from other countries will be good news not only for China, but also for Russian metallurgy.

And in the event of an escalation of the trade war between the United States and China, Russia should try to capitalize on this for itself. It is possible, for example, to expand the supply of Russian agricultural products and metal products to China, occupying a niche vacated by some American goods. The main thing is not to miss the moment.

After all, each country should be guided primarily by its economic interests.
