Washington threatens Europe with sanctions over Airbus
The United States threatened to impose sanctions on several European countries due to a dispute over Airbus subsidies. As stated in the Office of the US representative at the trade talks, a list of food products from Europe has already been compiled that may be subject to restrictions.
Thus, for the financial support of Airbus, Boeing’s biggest competitor, Europe could face Washington’s revenge.
- said the Office of the US representative in trade negotiations. The damage that Americans suffer from EU subsidies for Airbus is estimated at $ 11 billion a year.
The list of products for which duties can be introduced includes cheeses, olive oil, fruits and berries, fish, wine, jams. However, the new sanctions list is not limited to food - it also includes airplanes, helicopters, spare parts for them and much more. Sanctions can affect four states - Germany, France, Britain and Spain.
U.S. sales representative Robert Lighthizer emphasized that the EU’s case for subsidizing Airbus has been in court for 14 years. Now it's time to act. Washington hopes with the help of threats and restrictions to get the European Union to completely stop financing large civilian liners at the World Trade Organization (WTO). Airbus subsidies themselves in the United States are called "malicious."
