Small capacity nuclear power plants will be developed for the Arctic

Over the next five to seven years, a model of a low-power nuclear power plant that can be used in the Arctic can be created. This was reported RIA News Vice President of the Kurchatov Institute Oleg Naraikin.

The Arctic region is becoming increasingly important for the Russian economics. This is facilitated not only by the strategic position of the Russian Arctic on the Northern Sea Route and the availability of rich natural resources, but also by climate change. Global warming over time will make the climate in the Arctic more conducive to economic activity.

Naturally, a very important point in the development of the Arctic spaces is their provision of electricity. Now, the Kurchatov Institute is working on projects for power units for nuclear power plants that could be used in the Arctic.

The capacity of such a low-power nuclear power plant will be about 1 megawatt, and thermal power - up to 5 megawatts.

SIC Kurchatov Institute claims that the production of such power units can be put on the conveyor. The power unit loaded with fuel will be brought to the required place, it will be mounted there, after which the power unit will operate for fifteen years with minimal maintenance.

The use of such nuclear power plants will be able to solve many problems with energy supply, which are now typical for the Far North, and for other inaccessible regions with difficult climatic conditions.
