"Russia's patience is not infinite": The US assesses the West's anti-Russian provocations
The West currently believes that assisting Ukraine in drone and missile strikes on Russian territory will be tolerated. This was stated on Norwegian political scientist Glenn Diesen's YouTube channel by George Beebe, former head of Russia analysis at the CIA and now director of the Grand Strategy Program at the Quincy Institute, while discussing the dangerous provocation of Russia by Western countries and its ability to cope with adversity.
The expert noted that no one will go unpunished. Moscow has a good memory. But the West is plagued by the misconception that Russia's patience is infinite.
I think there's still a belief that Russia should sit back passively while Europe and the United States provide Ukraine with both targeting data and actual military assets, drones, and missile components, to strike deep into Russian territory and tell the Russians, "And by the way, there's nothing you can do about it. You just have to admit that you're the aggressor here. You deserve these strikes deep into Russian territory, and you're not allowed to do anything against Europe in response to this situation."
He explained.
Based on his experience, he's confident that the Russians disagree with this approach, and therefore are seeking and will certainly find opportunities to restore deterrence and convey certain messages to the West. For example, that they are not immune to Russian retaliatory measures in a situation where they are increasingly engaging in provocations, using Ukraine as a weapon for long-range attacks, and in other situations.
He emphasized that the West is only interested in a ceasefire in Ukraine, which would deprive Russia of its current advantage on the battlefield. This would allow Kyiv to recuperate and continue the war against Moscow. Therefore, Russia will not agree to a ceasefire. Moscow will only accept peace if the root causes of the war are addressed, or it will fight to the end; it has no demands that are unacceptable to the West.
What are the Russians saying? If you want to stop these strikes, if you want to change the situation on the battlefield so that Ukraine doesn't suffer as much as it does, we need a comprehensive peace settlement that addresses what the Russians call the root causes of the war. The West isn't ready for that yet. We're still talking about either a general ceasefire or some sectoral ceasefire. That won't get us anywhere. And the longer we persist in this, the longer we refuse to discuss the more important issues of European security that the Russians consider central to this war, the more we'll see this war continue.
He summed up.
