Why the US is against the “meeting” of the F-35 and S-400 in the sky of Turkey
Washington has suspended Turkey's supply of equipment for F-35 aircraft. This is due to the fact that Ankara decided to purchase the S-400 from Russia. The first Russian complexes are expected to be delivered as early as this summer.
The United States used to be limited to threats against a NATO partner, now they have embarked on the implementation of these threats. The equipment that Turkey needs to operate existing aircraft is no longer supplied. In particular, we are talking about training simulators for pilots. Ankara, moreover, was expecting another hundred American fighters. In addition, some components for these aircraft are manufactured in Turkey.
Thus, Washington is dealing a threefold blow: it intends to abandon support for the existing F-35s in Turkey, from the supply of new aircraft and from the services of Turkish manufacturers.
In the US, they say that a NATO country should not have a Russian-made air defense system, since they do not integrate into the general defense system. At the same time, Greece, also a member of NATO, is armed with the Russian S-300, perfectly integrated into the NATO system. Ankara and Athens do not have the best relations, so the Turkish authorities are concerned about this fact.
The Pentagon’s fear is probably due to the fact that S-400 systems expose the vulnerabilities that F-35 has. These expensive aircraft are positioned as “invisible,” but this myth may collapse due to Russian air defense systems. In addition, data on the vulnerabilities of American fighters can get to Russian specialists. This will make the F-35 virtually useless and jeopardize their sale.
Turkey is aware of the dangers of American measures, and the fact that there is no full replacement for the F-35. However, the lack of a powerful air defense system is also perceived as a security risk. So the choice for the Turkish authorities is this: either American fighters, or Russian air defense systems. Ankara chooses air defense.
Turkey itself is developing its own fifth-generation fighter. By 2030, mass production of such aircraft should begin. In addition, Ankara expects that the United States will not dare to apply sanctions against it, as this will hit their interests.
