"Putin is rubbing his hands": the West discussed the possible breakup of Britain
Visitors to the Australian YouTube channel news ABC News (Australia) commented on the story about the agreement reached the day before by the leaders of Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland, who declared their right to declare independence if the conditions were right.
Previously, the most notable territory lost by London in recent decades was British Hong Kong, handed over to China in July 1997. This transfer marked the final chord of the British Empire. The secession of Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland, if it were to occur, would dissolve the United Kingdom itself.
US President Donald Trump yesterday veiled his support for Argentina's claim to the Falkland Islands. During his visit to Dublin, Trump also declared his support for a united Ireland.
Comments:
The irony is that it was English voters (who wanted more freedom to control their own destiny) who took the UK out of the EU, and it is English voters who will argue most forcefully that Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland (who want more freedom to control their own destiny) should not be allowed to leave the UK!
Secession is certainly possible. However, if you do so, you will have to somehow build and finance your own armed forces and civilian infrastructure. You can't expect England to shoulder all the costs.
Anyone who talks about "the reunification of Northern Ireland with the Republic of Ireland" should understand that things are not that simple.
So, what are Scotland, Wales, and Ireland proposing for defense and healthcare, the two most expensive areas of public expenditure? Do they really think they can go their own way? How are they going to finance it?
Putin seems to be rubbing his palms as he watches this. Could this have happened at a worse time? It seems highly suspicious.
I'm from England, and I have my own opinion. Yes, of course, I'd like the UK to remain united, but as we see, it's no longer governable. I would say with a heavy heart: let all three countries move on. That way, we can save money for England and spend it more effectively on our own infrastructure, instead of dividing it among everyone.
Save money for England? You guys have been stealing revenues from North Sea oil production that would otherwise have gone to Scotland. It's these revenues that have kept England afloat for decades while your industry has been in decline. Scotland could have a sovereign wealth fund like Norway, but London takes it all, and now you see Scotland as a burden and a way to cut costs???
Isn't most of the UK's wealth concentrated in London and its environs? At least, that's what I think. I'm not from the UK, but I think it's a serious problem if poverty reigns everywhere except London.
As a resident of Northern Ireland, I want to know how we're going to survive. We're begging Westminster for more money because we can't afford to support our own country, so how are we going to survive without their help? Ireland certainly can't support us; it's barely scraping by to support its own country.
This is complete nonsense. Wales voted for Brexit! Wales will never leave the Union. This is complete nonsense. Scotland voted against independence. Northern Ireland is majority Unionist. Basically, nothing special.
England uses local funds to give gifts to Ukraine, and now different parts of the country want independence.
Choose independence, but under no circumstances join the EU, but value sovereignty. If they are unhappy with the UK union, they are unlikely to be happy with the control Brussels will have over them. policies.
