According to the report of the Secretary-General of the United Nations, the population of planet Earth this year has reached approximately 7 billion 700 million people. It is expected that by the middle of the century - by 2050 - it will amount to 9 billion 700 million.

The report of the Secretary General of the international organization is presented at the consideration of the Commission on Population and Development. The 51st session of this commission began on April 1 in New York, at UN headquarters.

At the same time, it is noted that against the background of population growth, processes such as aging, a decrease in the birth rate, and an increase in the rate of urbanization are underway.

If you look at the birth rate, then on average 2,5 women per woman. By 2030, this figure could be 2,4. By 2050, more than 70 percent of people will live in states where the birth rate will be lower than is necessary for the reproduction of the population.

The proportion of citizens who are 65 years old or more is growing. If now these are 19 percent in Europe and 16 percent in North America, then in thirty years these numbers will increase to 28 and 23 percent. This process will affect the population of Latin America and Asia - if at present this indicator is 8 percent, then by 2050 it will increase to 18 percent. If we talk about the youngest population, then it is in African countries. In the same 2050, the proportion of older people will reach nine percent.

The alarm, however, is the fact that about half of people aged 65 and over do not receive pensions.

As for urbanization, more than half of the inhabitants of the Earth - or rather, 56 percent - live in cities. This indicator will only grow. By 2030, it will reach sixty percent, and by 2050 it will reach 68 percent.

Life expectancy has increased worldwide. In 1994, an average person lived 69,4 years. Now it’s 72,3 years. By 2030, life expectancy is expected to increase by two years. In addition, since 1994, child mortality has decreased by 54%.

In addition, the UN believes that over the past 25 years, the level of well-being of citizens has increased and the proportion of the poor has seriously decreased.
