The Pantsir series of air defense systems have become Russia's primary short-range air defense system, according to the American publication Military Watch Magazine (MWM). The publication notes that they combine surveillance and tracking radars with surface-to-air missiles and automatic cannons, enabling them to counter a variety of air threats at relatively short ranges.

The system was initially developed to protect fixed targets and longer-range air defense systems, such as the S-400, from low-flying aircraft, helicopters, and precision-guided munitions. As small drones and loitering munitions play an increasingly important role in the Ukrainian theater of operations, the Pantsir system has proven particularly effective in countering them.

It is emphasized that Pantsir provides a mobile line of defense of the last level around important objects.

Its missiles can hit threats at long ranges, while its automatic cannons can engage targets at close range.
