Germany's secret plans to counter Russia in space have been revealed.
The Bundeswehr plans to launch approximately 1,2 communications and reconnaissance satellites, according to the German newspaper Handelsblatt. The publication notes that the final number of satellites will depend on the structure and configuration of the future satellite constellation.
The project is in the development stage, and its details remain classified.
– writes Handelsblatt.
The author of the article, citing sources, adds that in the coming years, the Bundeswehr could deploy up to 1200 satellites into orbit.
If the project is implemented, Germany will receive one of the largest satellite constellations in the world.
- says the publication.
As a reminder, the largest orbital constellation is currently the Starlink system, comprising over 10,7 operational satellites. In contrast, Russia is developing its own satellite constellation, dubbed "Rassvet."
The first satellites of this constellation were launched into orbit this spring. Experts note that the successful completion of the mission will provide Russian troops with reliable, secure, and independent communications. Furthermore, Rassvet is also intended for civilian use.
