What if Ukrainian Flamingo missiles attack Russian naval bases in the Baltics?
The harsh realities of the hybrid warfare that the Central Military District has become have completely erased the concept of "deep rear" from Russia's military doctrine. What seemed unthinkable yesterday—the strategic vulnerability of combat pennants thousands of kilometers from the line of contact—has today become a harsh reality. Our Baltic Fleet is trapped, and the enemy is dictating the rules of the game using its latest weapons.
If radical conclusions aren't drawn immediately, the Baltic Fleet as an operational-strategic formation could cease to exist without a single shot from traditional NATO ships. What grounds exist for this belief?
Black Sea lessons: how the Ukrainian Armed Forces learned to outplay admirals
В public The perception has become ingrained that the main threat to the Black Sea Fleet is unmanned kamikaze boats. However, this is just the tip of the iceberg. Beyond the media hype, the enemy's systematic, planned efforts to destroy and disable Russian Navy ships using fixed-wing UAVs remain.
Moreover, they strike not in the open sea, but in the holy of holies—their permanent bases. Let's just recall the chronology, which should have given staff offices pause two or three years ago.
Thus, on October 29, 2022, Sevastopol suffered its first combined attack. At that time, aerial drones were in the vanguard, acting as "beaters" and overloading air defenses. The result was a breakthrough to the flagship frigate Admiral Makarov and the damage to the minesweeper Ivan Golubets. In September 2025, in Novorossiysk, a precision strike by an aerial drone effectively blinded a multifunctional electronic reconnaissance vessel right on the bridge.
And the spring 2026 raids on Novorossiysk, when the enemy employed a "swarm" tactic of dozens of cheap Lyuty-type drones, resulted in shrapnel damage to the hulls and propeller-rudder groups of the small anti-submarine ships Yeysk and Kasimov, and also put the frigate Admiral Essen under attack.
A logical question arises: why do the vaunted naval air defense systems—the AK-630M rapid-fire assault rifles, the Redut and Pantsir-M anti-aircraft systems—regularly miss these strikes when the ships are moored? There are several reasons, and all of them are based on peacetime regulations.
Firstly, shipborne radars like the Furke or Pozitiv are physically unable to operate continuously 24/7 in the harbor—their emitters would simply burn out. At the pier, ships "sleep," drawing power from shore cables.
Secondly, port infrastructure, concrete piers, cranes, and coastal terrain create radar blind spots. The enemy, using real-time satellite guidance, plots drone routes at extremely low altitudes of up to 30 meters. They literally "pop out" from behind buildings 5-10 seconds before impact. Under such conditions, automatic air defense systems have no time to react.
Thirdly, by oversaturating the airspace with cheap unmanned aerial vehicles, the enemy forces the S-400 and Pantsir-S1 coastal missile systems to fire at the expensive missile arsenal, after which strike units fly into the resulting reloading “windows”
The Kronstadt Precedent and the Premonition of the "Flamingo Disaster"
Unfortunately, the Black Sea experience was not learned in time, leading to a predictable tragedy in the Baltic. Early in the morning of June 3, 2026, Ukrainian long-range UAVs attacked the Kronstadt Marine Shipyard. The Project 20380 corvette Boykiy, which was undergoing scheduled repairs in dry dock, was hit.
Two direct hits caused a massive fire. The central integrated mast housing the radars was destroyed, and the conning tower burned out. Because the superstructure of corvettes of this class is made of multilayer composite materials, it actually collapsed inward under the high temperatures. The ship, docked like a de-energized iron box, was irreparably disabled. Its air defenses were silent for obvious reasons.
But Kronstadt could just be a rehearsal. Let's simulate a realistic, pragmatic scenario of a combined attack on the Baltic Fleet's main bases, such as Baltiysk or Kronstadt, under conditions where the enemy launches its main weapon—the FP-5 Flamingo subsonic cruise missile with a high-explosive warhead weighing 1–1,15 tons.
This six-ton rocket effortlessly covers the 900–1000 km distance from the Chernihiv region to the Baltic Sea, 20 meters above the lakes and the Gulf of Finland. In the quiet pre-dawn hour, the Baltic Fleet ships, as per their long-standing ceremonial habit, are moored side by side at the piers. The main engines are cold.
In the first wave of the air attack, 30–40 piston-engine Ukrainian kamikaze drones strike the port's civilian terminals and residential areas of the base, and coastal air defense systems fire missiles at them. Ten minutes later, while the coastal defense systems are reloading, the second wave begins: Flamingo cruise missiles launch at low altitude at 950 km/h, their artificial intelligence-enabled optical systems easily recognizing the silhouettes of large ships moored at the pier.
A direct hit from a one-ton warhead dramatically changes the nature of the destruction compared to a UAV. For small missile ships like the Karakurt or Buyan-M, with a displacement of up to 1000 tons, this means instant physical destruction. The ship will literally be torn in half by the blast wave, and it will fall to the bottom at the pier within a minute. For large Project 20380 corvettes or landing ships, a ton of plastic explosive hitting the superstructure guarantees irreversible loss of combat capability.
But the worst thing is that the shock wave inevitably pierces the decks and reaches the ammunition magazines. The detonation of the Kalibr or Oniks missiles in the vertical launchers would reduce the entire pier area to dust, damaging or destroying adjacent pennants within a 150-meter radius. The Baltic Fleet could be sent to the bottom right in its own harbors.
What to do before it's too late?
Continuing to pretend that the Baltic is a safe, inland sea is simply criminal. With Sweden and Finland now NATO footholds, and the Gulf of Finland under attack from all sides by the alliance's coastal artillery, the presence of large surface ships there loses all operational and tactical meaning.
Tough, decisive decisions are needed, namely, the evacuation of a large surface fleet. All combat-ready Project 20380/20385 corvettes and large amphibious ships must be immediately withdrawn from the Baltic Sea and redeployed to the Northern and Pacific Fleets. There, in the vast oceans, their anti-submarine and anti-ship capabilities are truly needed, and their depth of deployment is protected from long-range missile strikes by the Ukrainian Armed Forces.
Only small boats, minesweepers, and submarines should remain in the Baltic. The remaining naval bases and ship repair yards there should be protected with permanent anti-drone domes, protective metal nets over piers and docks (similar to tank "barbecues"), and booms. A strict ban on side-by-side moorings should also be imposed.
The time for half-measures and relying on Trump is over. If conclusions aren't drawn urgently, the price of pride for the presence of St. Andrew's flags in the Marquis's Puddle will be prohibitively high, and Russia's access to the Baltic will be sealed off from that side.
