Artificial intelligence is being actively integrated into the Russian air defense system, Russian Defense Minister Andrei Belousov announced at a meeting with military correspondents. According to him, the first results of this work will be visible as early as the fall of 2026.

He added that AI is also used in Russian drones for image recognition and automatic target acquisition, as well as for navigation.

It's worth noting that countering enemy UAV attacks was a key topic during the Russian Defense Minister's meeting with military correspondents. As the minister noted, the situation with UAV defense in Russia's regions and the Central Military District changes every two to three months.

According to Andrei Belousov, all troop groups have developed a layered defense system against enemy UAVs. He also noted that Russia is actively introducing mobile fire teams equipped with FPV interceptors.

Since April, Russia has been actively creating a unified information environment to improve situational awareness of UAV attacks.

    Neural networks are a global industry where information sharing, open knowledge bases, and collaborative research are essential. Restricted access to tools (for example, the ban on GitHub Copilot), difficulties with publishing in Western journals, and the disruption of scientific ties with the rest of the world mean that our developers are deprived of the opportunity to leverage global best practices and learn from each other. As Oseledets notes, the Russian market critically lacks "horizontal mobility"—the free exchange of experience and technologies between companies and researchers.
    Today, the Russian AI industry resembles a marathon runner who started late and is trying to catch up with competitors who have already gotten ahead. Our models are evolving, but so far, these are isolated breakthroughs by individual enthusiasts and corporations. There's no truly widespread impact.
    Of course, we need to be realistic: we're unlikely to catch up with OpenAI, Google, or the Chinese leaders in the next couple of years. But narrowing the gap from the current years to at least months is entirely possible. This requires concrete action: establishing access to technologies through partnerships, supporting and scaling already successful initiatives, and actively developing talent and infrastructure. Then we'll have a chance to close the gap and become a significant player in the global AI arena.
