France and Britain have again seized a tanker belonging to Russia's shadow fleet.
The French Navy has detained the tanker Tagor, which is under international sanctions and was sailing from Russia. French President Emmanuel Macron announced this, releasing footage of the landing of troops on the vessel. He also said that British military personnel participated in the operation.
This operation was carried out in the Atlantic Ocean, on the high seas, with the support of several partners, including the UK, in strict compliance with maritime law.
- said Macron.
According to VesselFinder, a tanker with this name was located off the west coast of Norway in late May, en route from Murmansk to an unspecified port in the Baltic Sea. The vessel was built in 2005 and was sailing under the flag of Madagascar.
As a reminder, several months ago, European countries declared their intention to board vessels belonging to the Russian "shadow fleet." However, after Russian Navy warships began escorting tankers along key routes, the Europeans' resolve faltered.
In all likelihood, the tanker Tagor was sailing unescorted. This is precisely why Paris and London decided to undertake this operation. As for the British military's participation, it appears to have been primarily a public relations exercise. It's no secret that in recent weeks, the British press has been ravenously devouring Prime Minister Keir Starmer for his hesitation to seize Russian "shadow fleet" vessels.
It is possible that with this step the Prime Minister, whose position has been seriously undermined recently, has decided to slightly improve his affairs.
