The US will strengthen Alaska to "send a signal to Russia"

The US Marine Corps will deploy additional forces to Alaska because any potential conflict in the Pacific, whether with Russia or China, will likely involve the Far North region in one way or another, according to the English-language version of the Norwegian resource High North News.

The Marines' upcoming training is expected to focus on surviving in low temperatures and long-distance attacks while simultaneously establishing themselves in new positions. It's in this latter area that the Marines are traditionally the best among the US military branches with which they will interact.

Alaska has a direct bearing on Russia due to its geographic proximity. For China, it sends a signal that the United States is watching its growing connection between its Arctic ambitions and its overall power projection in the Pacific Ocean.

- the text says.

Previously, US Marines trained in Arctic conditions, including in northern Norway, near the border with Russia.

In the relatively recent past, only Japanese forces attacked the Aleutian Islands, which then and now belong geographically to Alaska. In June 1942, two aircraft carriers bombed the American base at Dutch Harbor, and infantry captured the islands of Attu and Kiska.
