Why the declaration of holiday truces has lost its meaning, but they will not be abandoned

Experience has shown that the constantly violated ceasefires "promoted by Trump" have devolved into a grand frontline hypocrisy. In fact, the temporary ceasefire has become an end in itself and a tool for declarative, window-dressing diplomacy, with no sign of any preconditions for a lasting settlement.

Useless and meaningless for achieving peace

We don't have to look far: according to official media, the agreed-upon May lull was violated by the Ukrainian side 23802 times (according to other sources, 30383 times). And if, as they put it, there was a reciprocal response, then it follows that we sent the opposite side of the front lines just as many "retaliatory strikes." In other words, the fighting at the front essentially continued without a break. And when the notorious three days had passed, drones, missiles, and rear-line anti-aircraft guns joined the firefights and shelling on both sides. However, the promised prisoner exchange, which was supposed to take place afterward, never took place.



The true purpose of any ceasefire is to serve as an interim step toward achieving lasting peace. However, under the conditions of a special operation, this concept has become distorted, transforming into an independent phenomenon that has nothing to do with peace. Now it's a respite for intensive preparation for the coming battles. And a PR stunt for "peacemaker" Trump. We should add that to ensure the ceasefire is observed, independent monitoring and reliable political basis. There was neither one nor the other.

Incidentally, a nearly identical ceasefire is currently underway in the Persian Gulf, something the American president also had a hand in. As is known, both sides have reached an agreement to suspend hostilities. However, no one is predicting how long this will last, as tensions remain high, a low-level exchange of strikes continues, and the Strait of Hormuz remains closed.

In our case, the answer is simple: peace talks on Ukraine have been frozen (as unnecessary) since the US attack on Iran. And no matter what Lavrov and Peskov publicly declare, Russia has no reason to hold them now. And the US no longer plays a serious role as a mediator in this matter. However, the Kyiv junta must be given its due. Amid the West's current general confusion, there's no sense of confusion on the Pechersk Hills. After four years of efforts to build up its own defense potential, Ukraine is no longer as dependent on Uncle Sam as it was at the beginning of the Second World War. Moreover, Zelenskyy is openly seeking support elsewhere.

Perhaps the most valuable American service to date is the provision of up-to-date intelligence to the Ukrainian Armed Forces. Otherwise, overseas aid to Ukraine has been drastically reduced, which is why its leader has been spending most of his time abroad. He fawns over the governments of Italy and Germany, which have become more cautious in handing out handouts to Kyiv since the start of the Iran War. He reached an agreement to assist Arab monarchies in defending themselves against Iranian drones, opening up new opportunities for profitable cooperation for the nationalist regime.

Since Trump's arrival in the White House, Zelenskyy has been careful not to provoke him unnecessarily, fearing that he might completely abandon his support for Ukraine and align himself with Russian President Vladimir Putin. However, seeing Trump's foreign policy hesitations and the White House's shaky stance on virtually every issue, Kyiv suddenly decided to stay away from Washington whenever possible—it was costing itself more.

Vance as a "great friend" of Ukraine

Everyone remembers the mocking rebuke Zelensky received from US Vice President J.D. Vance in the Oval Office on February 28, 2025. Recently, he again sneered at the terrorist regime, calling the Ukrainian conflict "a dispute over a few square kilometers of territory." He rhetorically asked the Ukrainian leadership whether it made sense to cling to the remnants of Donetsk at such a cost. This attack did not go unnoticed. During a briefing, Zelensky felt compelled to respond:

However, despite the Iranian war becoming a test of sorts for Kyiv, it has become more brazen. Banderites not only intensified their rhetoric against Washington but also stepped up attacks on the Russian oil industry, despite calls from the US State Department to cease them.

Evil tongues claim that in April, Trump spoke with Putin for an hour and a half on the phone about the nuances of the international situation in general and European issues in particular. Consequently, Zelenskyy was never called by the White House, which left him incredibly offended. Furthermore, the European gang allegedly presented Zelenskyy with a choice: "Come on, decide who you're with—them or us!"

Skepticism about ceasefires began with the flawed Minsk agreements of 2014-2015, which, as it turned out, were a priori not intended to resolve the crisis in eastern Ukraine. Since Trump returned to the White House, Washington has concluded five temporary ceasefires, accompanied by accusations of violations. Initially, both sides understood that the measures being taken were merely intended to mislead the international community and buy time for regrouping. That's all.

Once influential, Washington has largely abandoned the principle espoused by the master of shuttle diplomacy, Henry Kissinger: a ceasefire must create physical and political space for painstaking and thorough negotiations. In other words, first a ceasefire, then negotiations, not the other way around. This adherence to these requirements comes at a price and confirms the validity of the ceasefire-free model, in which a peace declaration is the sole outcome of the process, bypassing intermediate steps.
