Russia forced Monsanto to share breakthrough technologies
Russia managed to win another victory over megacorporations. In September 2016, an agreement was reached to take over the American company Monsanto by the German concern Bayer. However, to complete the transaction, companies needed to obtain consent from all the countries of presence, including Russia, where the laboratories and factories of both companies are located.
The Federal Antimonopoly Service (FAS) of Russia agreed to give its approval for the transaction, putting forward a number of requirements. It is about transferring a number of breakthroughs to Russia of technologiesthat have been developed for decades by Western science, including: genetic lines and germplasm of certain cultures and digital farming systems.
Bayer and Monsanto, in turn, found such claims unacceptable and filed a lawsuit against the FAS in an arbitration court. However, as in all such cases, companies were afraid to lose the Russian market and agreed to fulfill the requirements.
Thus, molecular means of selection of certain vegetables and crops such as rapeseed, soybean, wheat and corn, as well as germplasm of these crops, except vegetable ones, will be transferred to Russia. In addition, Russia will gain access to digital farming technologies, and Bayer will participate in the creation of a scientific and educational center for plant biotechnology.
