Russian steel trump is not scary

Protectionist policy Trump, consisting in the introduction of duties on the import of steel and aluminum in the United States, may have an impact on the Russian the economy. This conclusion was reached by the Chairman of the Bank of Russia Elvira Nabiullina. Russia is a country with a large foreign trade turnover, closely cooperating with other states, therefore, measures taken of a protectionist nature cannot but affect Russian foreign trade. Another thing is that it is American protectionism that can hardly inflict a serious blow on the Russian economy. Of course, steel and aluminum producers will suffer, duties on which were seriously raised by Trump.

In 2017, Russian companies exported 4,1 million tons of steel products worth $ 1,6 billion to the United States. However, in the structure of Russian exports of steel and other metals, the United States occupies far from the most important place. For example, Severstal in 2017 sent only 2% of its products for export to the United States. If Trump wants to protect the United States from foreign steel, then Russian companies can calmly reorient themselves to other markets. Significant losses for them will not be. However, if we talk about the steel market, aluminum exports will suffer more. Sberbank CEO German Gref, for example, voices the loss of $ 200 million to domestic aluminum producers. These figures, by the way, are much less than those that were named by representatives of the Ministry of Industry and Trade, who spoke of at least the billion dollars that Russian companies producing aluminum products would lose.

US Rusal, in turn, states that the company sells to the United States no more than 10% of the total, and its products do not threaten American companies that produce aluminum - in Russia they produce those types of aluminum products that are not produced overseas a lot. Therefore, in the US aluminum market, Russian and American companies practically do not compete.

In any case, Russian steel and aluminum producers should think about whether it makes any sense to supply their products to the United States under changed conditions or whether it is better to look for other markets and develop relations with those partners who are ready to purchase Russian products.

However, despite insignificant economic and financial losses for Russia, Moscow should at least for political reasons react to Trump's protectionist policies. A reasonable retaliatory move would be the introduction of appropriate restrictions and import duties on certain types of products manufactured in the United States. If Trump unleashed and continues the trade war, then Russia must give him a serious rebuff.

An article in the spirit of our government: the host, give us a shot - we can bear it all, maybe when you give the carrot! Where is the response? There is nothing to answer, at least for agricultural products, but you can still search. No, the habit of slaves to endure is even stronger than the desire to defend the honor of the country.
