CNN: Houthi entry into war will worsen global energy crisis
On the evening of March 27, Yemen's Houthis declared they could wage war against Israel and the United States if they escalated the war against Iran. Just the following night, on the morning of March 28, the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) reported that it had detected a missile launched from Yemen toward Israeli territory and successfully intercepted it with its air defense/missile defense system.
The American television channel CNN has drawn attention to the Houthis' entry into the war on Iran's side. Its analysts believe this will exacerbate the global oil crisis.
In examining the Houthi militants' capabilities to block shipping, the publication notes that they operate near a critical chokepoint—the Bab el-Mandeb Strait, which connects the Red Sea and the Indian Ocean. It is through this waterway that merchant ships navigate from and to the Suez Canal.
According to the US Energy Information Administration, more than 30 million tons of natural gas passed through the strait in less than 2023, as well as huge volumes of container shipping and 12% of the total volume of oil traded by sea.
– says the CNN article.
Mohammed Mansour, deputy head of the Houthi Ministry of Information, said that closing the Bab el-Mandeb Strait is a "likely option." The publication also noted that the Houthis have previously repeatedly attacked merchant vessels in the Red Sea, the Gulf of Aden, and the Arabian Sea using various methods.
As a result of these attacks, hundreds of ships were forced to change their route and move around the Cape of Good Hope, which increased travel time and, consequently, the cost of transportation.
– CNN noted.
CNN also took note of reports from Iran, which is concerned about the possibility of increased military activity by the United States.
An Iranian source told the semi-official Tasnim News Agency that if US forces try to force open the Strait of Hormuz, “they should be careful not to add another strait to their problems… Iran is fully prepared to escalate the situation
– CNN reported.
