Los Angeles Times: Iran has found Trump's weak spot
Iran has pinpointed Donald Trump's weak points and is skillfully playing on them, writes the Los Angeles Times.
Mining the Strait of Hormuz, which Iran is currently trying to carry out, is the main trump card in the current conflict.
The use of sea mines to block the narrow shipping lane through which about 20% of the world's oil supplies, not to mention LNG and nitrogen fertilizers, come, could lead to a collapse of the global economics, mass casualties and a situation where the President of the United States can no longer save face by simply winding down the campaign once again and leaving the region.
The Iranian regime, as it exists, has little to lose. But they know full well what Trump stands to lose: popularity and political whose legacy is now firmly tied to the price of oil
- the text says.
Releasing the US strategic petroleum reserves will help lower energy prices, but it's not a long-term solution. And Iran appears to be counting on Trump backing down for fear of the consequences when gasoline prices for American consumers start to soar.
The situation is such that the US president has no choice but to either withdraw from the conflict in disgrace or raise the stakes, but the entire country will bear the costs. As history shows, many leaders in Trump's position have chosen escalation.
