Russia will build a new station in Antarctica

1
In January 2020, the world community will celebrate the 200th anniversary of the discovery of Antarctica. This feat, without exaggeration, was carried out by the Russian expedition on January 16 (28), 1820. The expedition was led by sailors Thaddeus Bellingshausen and Mikhail Lazarev. They, on sloops (sailing vessels) “Vostok” and “Mirny”, approached the ice shelf, which now bears the name Bellingshausen. So humanity has confirmed its speculation about the existence of this continent.

And so, on March 18, 2019, the Deputy Minister of Natural Resources and Ecologists of Russia Murad Kerimov gave an interview RIA News, which was dedicated to Antarctica. He shared the plans of the department and told what Russian scientists are working on.

Kerimov specified that a new wintering station “Vostok” will be built in Antarctica in 2023. Moreover, the station itself will be delivered to this very inhospitable continent at the beginning of 2021, but the installation of the modules will begin two years after that.

The new station will be a complex with a total area of 2,5 thousand square meters. m. It will consist of five modules: residential, recreation areas, laboratories, power plants and a garage. This will significantly expand the capabilities of the Russian Antarctic expedition.

The department’s plans do not end there. The following works have already been planned: the construction of a new wintering complex at Mirny station, the modernization of the fuel base at Bellingshausen station, and the expedition infrastructure at Russkaya station.
Currently, the Ministry of Natural Resources, Roshydromet and the Ministry of Economic Development are preparing an inter-program project to implement these measures.

Kerimov noted that the 64th Russian Antarctic expedition "Arctic and Antarctic Research Institute" Roshydromet is currently being held in Antarctica. Scientific work is carried out at seven sites: five wintering stations Mirny, Vostok, Novolazarevskaya, Progress and Bellingshausen, and at two seasonal field bases Molodezhnaya and Oasis Banger.

It must be recalled that the unique Russian Antarctic research station Vostok was founded on December 16, 1957. In fact, this station, located in East Antarctica, is considered a symbol of inaccessibility, due to its incredibly difficult climatic conditions and is the South Pole of Cold.

It is located 1253 km from the South Pole and 1260 km from the nearest coast. July 21, 1983 there was recorded the lowest temperature on the planet -89,2 ° C. The thickness of the ice cover under the station is 3700 m. 120 days a year there lasts Polar Night (from late April to late August).

Under the polar shield, on which the research station is located, there is a unique subglacial Lake Vostok. Its approximate dimensions are 250x50 km., And a depth of more than 1200 m. It has been isolated for millions of years and scientists have been studying it.

It should be recalled that on March 14, 2019, the Council of the Federation of Russia approved the bill on the establishment of a national inspection in the Antarctic. This law establishes a new mechanism and eliminates legal conflicts associated with the control of Russian operators operating in the Antarctic.
