A wave of governor resignations is expected in Russia

It is possible that a wave of governor resignations is coming soon in Russia. This assumption was made by the publication. "Vedomosti", relying on two sources close to the presidential administration.

One of the sources told the resource that perhaps already this week the heads of several regions will be replaced. The second source said that the authorities this week only plan to determine a list of regions whose governors may retire. The layoffs themselves will be later.

The estimated number of governors who can be removed from their posts is from three to six. According to the information received in the publication, Marina Kovtun (Murmansk region), Yuri Berg (Orenburg region), Alexander Berdnikov (Altai Republic), Boris Dubrovsky (Chelyabinsk region) can be fired. In addition to them, the heads of Kalmykia and the Volgograd region, Aleksey Orlov and Andrei Bocharov, are threatened with dismissal.

It should be recalled that earlier a wave of gubernatorial resignations swept the country in the fall of 2017. Then, by decision of the President of the Russian Federation, Vladimir Putin, many officials lost their posts in the Nenets Autonomous District, Primorsky Territory, Krasnoyarsk Territory, Ivanovo, Oryol, Samara, Novosibirsk, Omsk, Nizhny Novgorod and Pskov Regions.

Until 2004, there was a system of direct election of governors in Russia, but it was canceled, and the president received the authority to dismiss regional leaders for "losing confidence" or "improper performance of their duties." In 2012, citizens regained the right to elect governors. But, if the head of the region leaves his post, the Kremlin will appoint an interim one.
