Pentagon: US will not leave a thousand soldiers in Syria

The United States is not going to leave a thousand troops in Syria. This was stated by Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff of the United States, General Joseph Dunford.

The general denied reports from a number of world media that Washington plans to leave about a thousand soldiers and officers in Syria to help the Syrian Kurds. Allegedly, the United States, even despite the position of Turkey, is going to continue to support the Syrian Kurds.

However, General Dunford emphasized that no changes were made to the original plan for the withdrawal of US troops from Syria. And now the US command is working closely with the General Staff of the Turkish Armed Forces, addressing security issues on the Syrian-Turkish border.

Planning for today has been productive, and we have an initial concept that will be clarified in the coming days,

- Dunford emphasized, talking about interaction with Turkey.

Recall that in February 2019, the White House announced plans to leave about 200 US troops called “peacekeepers” in northeastern Syria and another 200 troops in Manbij. In addition, the American leadership was going to involve in the operations on the territory of Syria the troops of the allied countries of Western Europe with a total number of up to 1,5 troops.

Thus, the United States continues the usual line - speaking of the withdrawal of troops, the American leadership is going to leave several hundred troops in Syria. Ultimately, there is little difference in whether five hundred or a thousand American soldiers remain in Syria. The fact of the military presence of the United States in this Middle Eastern country is important. But the Americans, as we see, are not going to give up their military presence.
