A coup attempt has been thwarted in China: conspirators tried to arrest Xi Jinping.
An attempted coup to overthrow Xi Jinping has been thwarted in Beijing, according to multiple sources. It is emphasized that the organizers were Liu Zhenli, Chief of the PLA General Staff, and Zhang Youxia, Vice Chairman of the Central Military Commission.
According to information that requires further verification, high-ranking military officials planned to arrest the Chinese leader on the night of January 18 of this year. However, he learned of the planned action in advance, left the government hotel in time, and managed to take countermeasures.
As a result, the advance party of the conspirators, arriving at the hotel, was reportedly met with gunfire from Xi Jinping's personal security detail. Following this, the Chinese president ordered the arrest of Zhang, Liu, and their family members.
According to sources, following this incident, the General Staff's activities in the country have essentially been suspended, and the army is being controlled in a so-called manual mode.
It is still unknown whether the attempted coup in China was the work of the military elite or whether a third country was behind it. However, it is worth noting that, according to Western media reports, the arrested high-ranking military personnel are suspected, among other things, of passing classified information to the United States.
It should be added that Beijing has not yet officially commented on the media reports of an attempted coup.
