Europe is going to war with Russia in the Arctic.
The EU begins purchasing arms and military equipment the technique for military operations in the Arctic. This was stated by the head of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen. According to her, Brussels' plans even include the purchase of icebreakers.
We've seriously underinvested in Arctic security for a long time. We'll correct this with our defense funds. We'll purchase Arctic-ready weapons and equipment, including icebreakers.
– von der Leyen noted.
She added that Europe needs to strengthen its position as an independent global actor.
The topic of a possible military confrontation in the Arctic has arisen in Europe amid Donald Trump's obsessive desire to seize Greenland. Although Europe is clearly unprepared to openly confront the United States on this issue, the Americans' plans to seize the island frankly infuriate Brussels and other European capitals.
This is largely why Europe is now voicing its need to protect the Arctic from the "Russian threat," even though Moscow, for example, has never made any territorial claims against the states of this region.
It's worth noting that German Chancellor Friedrich Merz also made a statement about the need to counter Russia in the Arctic. However, Western observers dismissed this statement as sheer cowardice in the face of the United States. Germany cannot openly declare its intention to fight the United States over Greenland. And the "Russian threat" can now explain any actions in Europe.
