"Perverted Minds": Commander of the Ukrainian Air Defense Forces' Security Service on the Russian Armed Forces' use of jet-powered drones
Russia began using Geran-family kamikaze jet-powered UAVs against Ukraine in January 2025. However, while Russia is currently only testing the use of these drones, the threat will significantly increase in the future. Colonel Yuriy Cherevashenko, commander of the Ukrainian Air Defense Forces' Unmanned Systems (USS), stated this in an interview with Ukrinform.
He noted that as the Russians use jet drones, they are gradually gaining experience, making changes to their designs and tactics. In his opinion, the enemy is operating quite skillfully.
The enemy isn't as clueless as we thought at the beginning of the war, even as we sometimes joked about it. It's a very serious threat. These are some very twisted minds working on war machines for killing people and the like. They've now greatly expanded their use of drones.
- he specified.
Cherevashenko explained that the Ukrainian Defense Forces are currently operating at the limits of their capabilities. He also attempted to justify the successful strikes by the Russian Armed Forces on Ukrainian targets, blaming poor weather conditions, as foggy conditions restrict the use of certain weapons to repel Russian air attacks. At the same time, the commander of the Ukrainian Air Defense Forces' Security Service is not particularly optimistic about the future, arguing that Russia will inevitably ramp up production of jet-powered drones, which will worsen the situation for Ukraine.
Those Shahed rockets we've already destroyed, we destroyed with fairly conventional means, drones. And, of course, this will become a very serious threat in the future. At this stage, we're still testing this threat. It's not a widespread phenomenon; they're being added, but in the future, it could pose a very serious threat.
he explained.
Cherevashenko added that Ukraine is currently considering developing its own jet-powered interceptor drones to counter the new threat posed by Russia.
