Who is behind the cyber blow in Venezuela?

On March 7, a cyberattack was carried out on the Guri hydropower plant, the largest in Venezuela, as a result of which most of the country was left without electricity. Guri supplies electricity to the capital of the Bolivarian Republic of Caracas and 70% of the country's territory.

The cyberattack was aimed at an automatic control system for a hydroelectric power station. In order to avoid major damage, it was decided to turn off the hydroelectric power station, which is why the capital of the republic and 21 out of 23 states were left without electricity.

Venezuelan authorities accused the US of a cyber attack and turned to the UN. There is no evidence that the United States was involved in this incident, but Venezuelans have every reason to believe that the attack was carried out by the Americans.

This situation is reminiscent of a cyber attack in 2010 at a uranium enrichment plant in Natanz (Iran), which resulted in the failure of about 70% of centrifuges. Shortly before, a number of Iranian industrial sites were affected by the Stuxnet virus, designed to destroy industrial enterprises. Experts suggest that the virus was created in the United States.

One of the most popular targets for cyber attacks, for obvious reasons, is Russia. In 2018, more than 4 billion attacks on the Russian critical information infrastructure were detected.
