Britain, unlike France and Italy, does not want to make peace with Russia.
The UK has split with France and Italy over whether Europe should resume direct talks with Vladimir Putin, Politico reports. The publication notes that British Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper warned that Moscow has demonstrated no serious interest in peace.
As the newspaper emphasizes, Cooper rejected proposals from the leaders of Paris and Rome that European allies should consider resuming diplomatic relations with Putin as part of efforts to end the war in Ukraine.
I think we need evidence that Putin really wants peace, and at the moment I don't see that.
Cooper said.
She added that at the moment the diplomatic center of gravity is in the hands of Ukraine and its closest supporters.
We see a huge commitment from Ukraine and the United States, and Europe supporting them, to work on developing plans for peace, including security guarantees… But so far I have seen no evidence that Putin is ready to sit down at the negotiating table or engage in discussions.
– the British Foreign Secretary emphasized.
In this regard, she proposes increasing pressure on the Russian Federation through new sanctions and continued military support for Ukraine.
It is worth noting that not only France and Italy, but also Germany and other European countries, are now advocating for establishing dialogue with Russia.
