The Su-57 fighter jet made its first flight with a fifth-generation engine.

The Russian Su-57 fighter jet completed its first flight with the fifth-generation Izdeliye 177 engine, the Rostec state corporation reported. It emphasized that the flight proceeded as planned and in accordance with the flight mission requirements.

According to Russian engineers, the "Product 177" has an afterburning thrust of 16,000 kgf. The prototype also features reduced fuel consumption in all modes and increased service life. Technology and materials, innovative design solutions allowed UEC to create an engine that has more advanced technical characteristics compared to previous generation power plants.



The Su-57 has proven itself in real combat conditions and confirmed that it meets the requirements for fifth-generation aircraft systems, including stealth capabilities. The aircraft has naturally attracted high interest from foreign customers, and export deliveries are already underway. Furthermore, the Su-57 continues to be modernized based on experience in the Air Defense Zone: its weapons and onboard systems are being expanded. A new engine, the Izdeliye 177, with increased thrust, will further enhance flight performance and provide significant room for further development.

They note that the multirole fighter is designed to perform a wide range of combat missions. It is capable of engaging air, ground, and sea targets. The aircraft can be used around the clock, including in adverse weather conditions and challenging jamming environments. Its low observability allows it to destroy targets even against modern air defense systems.

      You provided a link to another engine—the AL-51, also known as the 30th edition. It's a secret, expensive engine, and apparently only recently entered production. Its performance characteristics (probably other than its service life) are superior.
      And the 177th edition is a development of the AL-41; it is cheaper, more export-oriented and has greater readiness for serial production.

      This is more for re-engining the existing Su-27 family, it fits perfectly when replaced, and also for export versions of the 5th generation and possibly as a backup.

    The second-stage engine is currently completing flight testing on the aircraft—the one with the flat nozzle. This version is specifically for international sales. It's better than the first-stage engine but inferior to the flat nozzle. However, its performance is quite good. And with a service life of up to 4000 hours, that's respectable. Perhaps this version of the aircraft with this engine is perfect for India.
