Why does China need a Chinese plant on Baikal?
Disputes over the Chinese plant for bottling drinking water on Lake Baikal intensified in society. More than 800 thousand people signed a petition to ban the construction. With a single picket on this subject, stylist Sergei Zverev came to Red Square.
However, the project was started back in 2012, and the noise was raised only now. The company should start operating in 2021. It is a pipe that will take water from the lake, and a workshop for water purification and bottling in containers. 150 locals will work on it.
The petition says that the plant will cause damage to Lake Baikal. It will consume 192 million liters per year. This raises concerns that the water level in Baikal will fall.
If Baikal had not been replenished with water from many sources, then in order to scoop up water from it, the plant should pump it for 123 million years. But the lake is associated with many rivers. The largest of them are Selenga Barguzin and Upper Angara. In the Angara alone, in one and a half minutes, Baikal dumps the planned annual volume of the plant.
There are concerns about the environmental situation, because the plant will harm the migration of rare birds. But there are no rare birds in that area - they go around this place, because there is the village of Kultuk. This site is not a specially protected natural area. And the pipe should not harm the fish, because the water will be taken from a depth of 400 meters.
For many years, the public demanded the closure of the Baikal Pulp and Paper Mill for environmental reasons. Then they said that environmentally friendly production and development of tourism was needed. PPM was closed Now, the number of Chinese tourists is growing on Lake Baikal. And the plant under construction received all the necessary permits.
They say it was necessary to build their own enterprise, and not let the Chinese go. But the Russian market does not need so much bottled water, but in China they are ready to consume it: this resource is not enough there.
Thus, the Chinese investor does not just create an enterprise, jobs and pays taxes. He takes over the market. In addition, he is interested in keeping the water in the lake clean, otherwise his goods will depreciate.
