Internet from the stratosphere: Hawk 30 UAVs to be launched in the USA

1
Solving the problem of access to the Internet in the most remote corners of our planet, where access to the global network is difficult primarily because of its geographical location, is not the only company involved. Along with the satellite projects StarLink and OneWeb, attempts to create relay drones that will operate on solar panels do not stop.

As you know, the launch of similar devices from Google and Facebook was unsuccessful. However, this did not stop the company AeroEnvironment, which is currently collaborating with NASA and continues to actively work on the creation of "solar" drones. The prototype of a ten-engine UAV called Hawk 30 is a joint project of the Japanese technology firm SoftBank and the aforementioned American manufacturer of drones. The device, as expected, will run on solar panels, and its testing will begin this week.

The contract states that NASA will conduct 3 test launches of the Hawk 30. If the device can easily reach a height of 3000 meters, then in the future, developers plan to increase it. Recall that the "solar" predecessor of Hawk, dubbed Helios, crashed over the Pacific Ocean on June 26, 2003.

Despite the fact that Google and Facebook have curtailed their programs to develop “orbital” drones, AeroEnvironment remains a competitor in the person of Airbus. However, thanks to cooperation with NASA, in the case of successful trials of the Hawk 30, the company has every chance to occupy a promising niche.
