The Russian Arctic will not be left without icebreakers

The high quality of the reactor installations of Russian icebreakers makes their long-term trouble-free operation possible.

The director general of FSUE Atomflot Mustafa Kashka, in an interview with the official publication of the Russian nuclear industry, the Country of Rosatom, announced that the State Atomic Energy Corporation Rosatom intends to extend the operating life of the three existing domestic nuclear-powered icebreakers Taimyr, Vaigach and Yamal to 2025, 2027 and 2028 years respectively.

According to the head, the decision is due to the fact that an “ice break” cannot be allowed - a situation where old icebreakers will be decommissioned and new ones have not yet been adopted.

A comprehensive survey of the systems and equipment of the reactor facilities of these three icebreakers will be carried out by the Afrikantov OKBM specialists with vast experience in the field of nuclear energy.

The extension of the service life of the reactors at three Russian icebreakers will allow us to wait for the commissioning of new icebreakers of Project 22220, which are being built at the Baltic Shipyard by order of Rosatom - the Arctic, Siberia and the Urals.

If the current schedule for the delivery of new icebreakers is met, then the Arctic will be ready this year, Siberia in the next year 2020, and the Urals in 2021.
