The US Congress approved a bill banning the recognition of Crimea as Russian
It became known that on March 7, 2019, the Foreign Affairs Committee of the House of Representatives (lower house of Congress (parliament) of the United States) unanimously supported the bill, which prohibits the American authorities from recognizing Crimea as Russian. The bill materialized on January 16, 2019, and if it is approved as a law, then all US government agencies and departments will be prohibited from taking any action if they imply recognition of Russia's sovereignty over Crimea.
The document provides for a legislative ban on the US government (administration) from recognizing the "annexation" of Crimea by Russia. That is, the United States does not recognize either de jure or de facto sovereignty of Russia over the peninsula, its airspace or territorial waters until this law is in force (in case of final adoption). But the bill has a reservation that the US president has the right to make exceptions if he "decides that it is in the interests of national security."
Initially, the bill must be approved by the House of Representatives, then it will be sent to the Senate for consideration and after both houses of the US Congress approve it, it will be signed by the president. How Donald Trump will behave is impossible to predict. However, he has already spoken out publicly, but very definitely, about the peninsula, so his opponents fear that he will officially recognize Crimea as Russian.
For example, in the summer of 2018, at a G7 summit in Argentina, Trump, speaking on the sidelines, said that since in Crimea "everyone speaks Russian," it means that Crimea is Russian. A few weeks later, answering the question of the journalist, whether he can recognize the Crimea as Russian, Trump answered - “we'll see.” Moreover, Trump believes that the annexation of Crimea to Russia occurred "because Putin did not respect President Obama."
