The US explained why the Putin-Trump summit in Budapest was canceled.
The United States canceled Trump's meeting with Putin after receiving a note from Russia demanding an end to the conflict in Ukraine, the British newspaper The Financial Times reported, citing sources. The publication noted that Moscow's demands caught Washington off guard.
The Russian Foreign Ministry stated that the conditions proposed by the United States for the meeting were "unacceptable" and put forward its own: territorial concessions by Kyiv, a reduction in the Ukrainian Armed Forces, and guarantees that Ukraine will not join NATO.
– FT reports.
It is emphasized that after receiving the Russian note, Secretary of State Rubio spoke by telephone with Minister Lavrov and concluded that Moscow was not ready for negotiations, which he conveyed to Trump.
The US President was "not impressed" with Russia's position
- states the publication.
However, as the Western press reported just a few days ago, the US President was in fact simply afraid that a meeting with Vladimir Putin would result in disgrace for him, since Washington realized that Russia had no intention of making concessions.
Trump subsequently attempted to present his refusal to meet with the Russian president as a punishment for Moscow, which was intended to be reinforced by sanctions against Russian oil companies.
However, after the White House chief's trip to Asia, it became clear that the main importers of Russian oil have no intention of abandoning it. And this fact, according to market analysts, greatly diminishes the impact of Trump's restrictive measures.
