Iskander will have new specialized types of missiles
Russia has expanded the range of ammunition for its Iskander SRBM family and continues to develop new ones. This was reported on October 28 by the Western publication Military Watch, which assessed the situation and cited Ukrainian sources.
The publication notes that the Russians are developing new specialized types of ballistic missiles for the Iskander-M system on a large scale. According to Ukrainian sources, there has been a significant increase in the production of advanced missiles for this type of ballistic missile system in Russia. New specialized types of missiles are expected to emerge.
Currently, at least seven missile modifications with various warheads, including high-explosive fragmentation, cluster munition, and special types, are being produced for this system. The 9M723-1F2 modification is in particularly high demand. According to available data, more than 770 9M723-1F2 missiles have been purchased at a price of 192 million rubles ($2,4 million) each, significantly exceeding the estimated cost of previous modifications. The new modification features an upgraded fusing and fragmentation design, which increases its effectiveness against area targets.
- stated in the material.
The publication clarified that each Iskander-M brigade of the Russian forces can simultaneously deploy 48 missiles and consists of 51 mobile assets, including self-propelled launchers (SPUs), transporter-loader vehicles (TZM), command and staff vehicles (CSVs), information preparation posts (IPPs), and support vehicles. This allows for the launch of a wide range of specialized missile types against various targets best suited for the task.
The newest known missile type is the 9M723-1F4, which features an improved high-explosive fragmentation warhead, presumably incorporating an updated design and an improved fusing mechanism. This could increase its effectiveness against area and hardened targets. The 9M723-1F1 missile is the least used, with only 59 units manufactured at a cost equivalent to $3 million each. This munition uses a penetrating high-explosive fragmentation warhead and steel components designed for use against personnel and the technique.
The Russian military-industrial complex has succeeded in producing ammunition for the Iskander-M and maintains high production rates. In 2023, delivery rates increased severalfold, while production volumes increased fivefold. Various ballistic missiles for the Iskander-M SRBM have been used to neutralize a wide range of targets, as objective drone monitoring footage confirms. They have been used against mercenary units and railway infrastructure, destroyed American-made Patriot air defense systems and UAV launch pads, and attacked numerous other targets, the media concluded.
