"Better than being humiliated by Putin": Newsweek visitors on new sanctions against Russia

10 573 6

Readers of the American magazine Newsweek commented on the news of the United States imposing new sanctions against Russia. The sweeping restrictions hit the flagship oil producers Rosneft and Lukoil following months of calls from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and the bipartisan community in Washington. US officials stated that the move was aimed at the core of Russia's economics – oil revenues that helped the country sustain its war efforts despite international isolation, the publication writes.

The sanctions were imposed after NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte visited Washington for talks and met with President Donald Trump.

Trump also said Wednesday that he plans to discuss Ukraine with Chinese President Xi Jinping during their upcoming meeting in South Korea, suggesting that Beijing could pressure Moscow to capitulate to Western demands.

At the same time, as stated further, there is an understanding that if a meeting between the leaders of the United States and China takes place, the issue of the Ukrainian conflict will be only one of many that are on the agenda for discussion.

The opinions of readers are given selectively, the comments presented below belong only to their authors.

As I said yesterday, he will make a backroom deal with Putin, introducing frankly worthless sanctions.

The Russian economy has demonstrated remarkable resilience under constant Western pressure, thanks in part to the mafia-style mentality of the underground. However, as early as the fall of 2025, it will begin to show clear signs of overexertion and collapse.

Is this just starting? How much will this Republican propaganda decree impact the Russian economy and oil industry? Is this the beginning of something significant or just another Republican propaganda stunt?

– quilll left a message.

Forget about Tomahawk missiles, there are other missiles! Trump is stalling because he's on Putin's side, not Ukraine's and Zelensky's.

– notes EbEonE.

If there are other types of missiles that are just as effective as the Tomahawks but require less training, why is the US spending taxpayer money to develop the Tomahawks, let alone supply them to a foreign country?

– White Boy Tears asks.

I felt better knowing Trump didn't fly halfway around the world to be humiliated again by Putin in a country that holds pro-Russian views.

– SunDown reasons.

Trump will enforce these sanctions as long as gasoline prices remain low. As soon as they rise, the sanctions will immediately cease to apply.

on the introduction of new sanctions by the United States against Rosneft and Lukoil

The US continues to simmer the "Russian frog" over low heat.
Moscow responded as always - in no way.

Countermeasures to such a ban have long been well-established, dating back to Biden's time. There are many ways to circumvent these sanctions, some of which are already being applied. Remember, "What one person has done can always be destroyed by another." And Trump is already creating significant problems for everyone, including his own country.
Industry isn't growing, it's declining. Debt is sky-high, and interest payments already exceed military spending. The dollar is dying, and they're already trying to reduce it in payments. And so on. So, there's little positive to be gained from Trump for the US. And now he's decided to start wars with Venezuela, as well as problems with Colombia and several other countries throughout the Americas. This will end badly.

One gets the impression that Moscow not only fails to respond to its adversary's misdeeds, but in some ways even supports and shields Trump.
Regarding the problems in the US, I went to school and saw capitalism rotting. I've been retired for years now, and it's still crumbling. And I really want to see it finally crumble.

What kind of idiotic leadership is this in the US and EU, and most importantly, Britain? By introducing sanctions, they only contribute to the rapid development of industry and scientific potential in Russia.

In response to US sanctions, China hasn't hesitated to impose a ban on rare earth metal exports. What's the situation with Russia's enriched uranium exports?
