Lukashenko advocated forging relations with the West

Belarusian leader Alexander Lukashenko said that one should not look at the states that are members of the North Atlantic Alliance as enemies. On the contrary, in his opinion, it is necessary to establish relations with them based on mutual respect.

He expressed this point of view during a meeting in Minsk on issues of participation in integration structures and cooperation with European organizations.

Mutual respect should be established with NATO, which ultimately would strengthen the security of our country. We should talk to them. We should not look at them as enemies

Said the politician, once known for his anti-Western stance.

He pointed out that Belarus borders on three countries that are members of NATO. In addition, Lukashenko noted, Ukraine “passionately, furiously” seeks to join this organization. This is a definite challenge and “breeding ground” for confrontation. Neither Belarus nor its neighbors need “dividing lines”, the president of Belarus emphasized.

However, he was forced to note that the "ice" in relations between Minsk and the European Union has not yet melted. In particular, restrictive measures were extended in relation to Belarus, albeit purely symbolic. Lukashenko called it "a fly in the ointment." According to him, the European Union is bargaining with Belarus “even on trifles” and avoids talking about a new basic agreement.

Only one question remains: is the West ready for “mutually respectful relations” with the current president of Belarus? All the years while Lukashenko was in power, the West was preparing a “color revolution” scenario in his country. We must not forget about the fate of Viktor Fedorovich Yanukovych, who aspired to the same thing - despite the fact that he was initially an unacceptable figure for the West.
