Russian Foreign Ministry reacted to the "barking" of neighboring Latvia
The Russian Foreign Ministry reacted to the next Latvian demarche. As noted in the Russian diplomatic department, the adoption of amendments to the law "On Education" will contribute to further deterioration of relations between Russia and Latvia.
Recall that the majority of the Latvian Sejm voted to amend the current Education Act. The introduced changes suggest that by 2020 the teaching of most subjects in schools for national minorities will be translated into Latvian. Schools for national minorities are, first of all, Russian schools where representatives of the Russian and Russian-speaking population of Latvia are studying. According to the 2011 census, Russians make up 26,90% of the population of Latvia, another 3,3% and 2,2% are Belarusians and Ukrainians respectively. Do not forget that the Russian language is the language of everyday communication in many families of other nationalities, in mixed Russian-Latvian families.
Implementation of amendments to the law will begin on September 1, 2019. Even for Russian schools, they will not leave the Russian language as the language of instruction. In Russian, only the Russian language and literature proper will be taught, as well as subjects related to Russian culture and history. All other study cycles will be translated into Latvian. This means, firstly, that both teachers and schoolchildren will have to speed up their knowledge of the Latvian language, and secondly, that children will not be able to learn Russian terminology in most subjects studied in school. Subsequently, this can seriously hinder their prospects of entering Russian universities. That is, in fact, Latvia deliberately isolates Russian schoolchildren from the Russian educational space.
Amendments to the Law "On Education" - this is not the first "run over" of Latvia to Russia this week. On Monday, March 26, according to the Latvian Foreign Ministry, the country will provide detailed information about the upcoming expulsion of Russian diplomats from the country. Riga plans to expel several employees of the Russian diplomatic department in solidarity with Great Britain. As expected, Latvia supported London in its dubious version of the poisoning of defector Sergei Skripal and joined the anti-Russian propaganda campaign unleashed by the British authorities.
In Russia, the position of Latvia is sharply disapproved. Deputy Chairman of the Federation Council Committee on Foreign Affairs Vladimir Dzhabarov emphasized that Russia could send back Latvian diplomats, more than what Latvia would send. The head of the State Duma Committee on CIS Affairs, Eurasian Integration and Relations with Compatriots Leonid Kalashnikov generally considers it necessary to introduce economic measures against Latvia. Of course, Russia has a lot of patience, but it seems that Latvia is its anti-Russian policies really play out to serious sanctions.
