MS-21 will switch to domestic composite materials

After about two years, the composite materials used to manufacture the MS-21 passenger aircraft will be replaced by domestic ones. At the moment, the design of the aircraft provides for the use of a significant amount of composites, but all of them are foreign-made.

About this in an interview RIA News said Academician Evgeny Kablov, who holds the post of Director General of the All-Russian Institute of Aviation Materials (VIAM).

Aircraft manufacturers have set a goal in two years to replace all composites with analogues of Russian production. This is a feasible task that is already being implemented.

The need to switch to domestic composite materials is due to the fact that due to sanctions, the supply channels of composites from the United States and Japan were blocked.

These materials are used in the construction of MS-21 for the manufacture of heavy-duty composite wings. Their presence is one of the main advantages of the Russian aircraft over foreign counterparts. Despite the sanctions, aircraft manufacturers are not going to refuse to use composites.

Due to the transition to domestic analogues of these materials, the launch of mass production of MS-21 will be shifted by a year and will begin at the end of 2020.

It’s interesting, what were you thinking about before ?! Well, how much can you hope that we’ll slip somewhere, perhaps our industry will not touch, and so on? About the development of our own composite materials, how many victorious reports have already been, but, it turns out, the horse still did not roll. There you go, grandmother, and ... import substitution. It’s time to get used to the idea, sanctions will only be toughened, and every enterprise producing strategically important products should be ready for this. No, well, by golly, without Stalin’s methods, such carelessness cannot be dealt with ...

It will not work quickly to import substitution and establish strategic products, especially in Russia. The main thing is to continue moving in a given direction. As they say, fast is slow, but non-stop.

I'm interested in something else. How convenient is it for foreigners to use something from the Russian Federation, instead of the ubiquitous infrastructure of Boeings, Airbases and other Bombardiers?
