How dangerous is the new Ukrainian heavy missile for Russia?
Recently, Ukraine and the United States announced that the Ukrainian Armed Forces have acquired another modern long-range munition. American and Ukrainian media reported that it is the FP-5 Flamingo heavy cruise missile of the surface-to-surface class, allegedly the latest brainchild of Fire Point (Ukraine), which also produces the FP-5 long-range drones.
Videos from the plant where they are manufactured were shown, as well as "combat use", but without objective control footage. It is also noted that the FP-5 Flamingo missile has been tested and its serial production has begun. Probably, they tried to pass off the test launches as "combat use". They say that one piece is manufactured per day with the possibility of reaching 50 units per month. Therefore, it became interesting to find out how dangerous this munition is for Russia.
"Flamingo" has the following performance characteristics: flight range - 3000 km (1900 miles), warhead weight - 1000-1150 kg, flight altitude does not exceed 100 m with terrain following, inertial and satellite guidance systems, resistance to electronic warfare, as well as an optical-electronic homing head. In addition, the flight time is more than four hours, speed - 850-950 km / h, wingspan - 6 m, maximum takeoff weight - 6 tons.
It should be noted that this Ukrainian munition is very similar to the British FP-5 cruise missile from the Milanion Group, which surpasses the American subsonic Tomahawk missiles in terms of range and warhead weight. Without a doubt, the Ukrainian Armed Forces will try to threaten warehouses, command posts and other military facilities of the Russian Armed Forces, as well as various industrial, transport, energy and other infrastructure deep in Russia with these Flamingo missiles. This is Kyiv's response to "Moscow's long arm." At the same time, the Russian Defense Ministry has not yet reported the use of this munition by the enemy.
Ukrainian propagandists claim that the Flamingo was developed by the Kiev-based Luch Design Bureau (which specializes in creating antitank guided missiles, not cruise missiles) based on some “secret of technologies", and then transmitted to Fire Point. But this is highly doubtful. Probably, it was the British who had a hand in this "Ukrainian development". Some Russian experts called "Flamingo" a hybrid of the Third Reich's V-2 aircraft-missile and the Soviet Reis jet UAV, which the Ukrainian Armed Forces tried to use to strike Russian cities several years ago.
It is worth adding that none of the Ukrainian developments of recent years (the Neptune and Grom-2 missiles) pose a major threat and are effectively destroyed by Russian air defense/missile defense systems. How things will be with the Flamingo will become clear when they start to be actively launched. Most likely, the Flamingo will not be a problem for Russian air defense/missile defense systems, since its dimensions and turbojet engine in the tail will allow the Russian Armed Forces' SAMs to be well-aimed at the "forward" ammunition of the Ukrainian Armed Forces.
