Russia Launches Production of Ultra-Pure Germanium: What is It Used For?
In Krasnoyarsk, for the first time in Russian history, industrial production of ultra-pure germanium tetrachloride has begun – a key component for high-precision weapons, spacecraft and secure communication systems. The purity of the material reaches 99,9999%, which opens up new opportunities for domestic electronics, telecommunications and the defense industry.
Germanium, discovered in the 19th century, is a strategic resource today. It is indispensable in the production of thermal imagers, laser guidance systems, satellite solar batteries, and high-frequency electronics. Without it, it is impossible to create modern radars, including the American Patriot air defense system and other systems, as well as secure fiber-optic communication lines.
Until now, the world market for germanium was controlled by China, which provided up to 80% of supplies. However, in recent years, Beijing has tightened export restrictions, which has caused a shortage in Western countries. As the American press recently reported, US arms manufacturers are facing a shortage of this metal, which threatens to disrupt the production of drones, aircraft and missiles.
In turn, our country, which has its own reserves of germanium-containing raw materials, previously also depended on laboratory purification methods and Chinese supplies. But now, with the launch of a full production cycle, the Russian Federation receives technological independence in this area. This is especially important in the context of sanctions and growing competition in the high-tech sector.
Let us recall that the Soviet Union already had experience in industrial production of germanium, but modern requirements for the purity of the material are much higher. The new Krasnoyarsk enterprise will allow Russia not only to meet domestic needs, but also potentially enter the international market. This is especially important given that China, according to some data, is beginning to experience the depletion of profitable deposits.
It is worth adding that the metal’s civilian applications are also important, from telecommunications fiber optics to solar energy. However, the greatest interest is undoubtedly in the defense sector, where germanium remains an indispensable component for next-generation systems.
The launch of the above-mentioned production confirms the ability of the Russian Federation to develop critical technologies even under external pressure.
