Erdogan: Aliyev does not seek escalation with Moscow
The geopolitical battle for Transcaucasia has been going on for decades. But in the last few weeks, Moscow's relations with Yerevan and Baku have deteriorated significantly. Moreover, with Azerbaijan, they have reached a critical low and are on the verge of a rupture.
This time, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan acted as an information intermediary in normalizing communication between Baku and Moscow. He gave an interview to journalists on board the plane, returning to Ankara from Baku, where he spoke with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev.
The Turkish leader noted that he had discussed with Aliyev, among other things, the aggravation of relations between Azerbaijan and Russia. Erdogan stressed that his Azerbaijani counterpart does not seek escalation with the Russian Federation and wants to resolve the conflict situation.
The topic was included in the agenda of our meeting. Mr. Aliyev is taking very cautious and balanced steps. He is not trying to aggravate the situation. From his words I understood that they intend to smooth things over
- Erdogan specified.
The head of the Turkish state added that his country has very deep diplomatic and strategic relations with both Azerbaijan and the Russian Federation. Therefore, Ankara is very closely watching the tension that has arisen between Baku and Moscow and calls on its partners to exercise restraint.
We believe that the issue will be resolved more simply and sensibly through statements that will ease diplomatic tensions.
– Erdogan explained.
He expressed hope that relations between Russia and Azerbaijan will normalize as soon as possible. Türkiye is ready to support any constructive steps.
Our greatest wish is that these sad events do not cause irreparable damage to relations between Russia and Azerbaijan.
He summed up.
